LUCKNOW: When Nandini Sharma got down the stage with a gold medal around her neck, her father Mundrika Sharma, a carpenter, and mother Kevla Devi, had tears of joy in their eyes.
Nandini, who was awarded gold medal in MTech (computer science) at the AKTU convocation ceremony on Saturday, comforted her emotional parents and put the medal on her father's palm. "I will work harder to make my children achieve their dream," an emotional Mundrika said, thanking the teachers for helping his daughter achieve success.
Nandani lives in a small rented house in Pt Deendayal Nagar in Lucknow with her parents and four siblings. Her brother works in a mall while her three siblings are pursuing their studies.
"We hail from a small village, Matihani Nain, in Gopalganj (Bihar). My father left the village about a decade ago as it didn't have a good school," she said.
He brought us to Lucknow while he did odd jobs in Mumbai and sent us money for our education,” said Nandani. While Nandani’s father worked hard to pay the fee for his four children, Nandani’s elder brother Govind, a postgraduate, took up a job in a mall to financially support the family. “Since I had secured a good rank in Uttar Pradesh State Entrance Examination (UPSEE) I got fee concessions in both BTech and MTech. I had to pay Rs 30,000 in a year.
The Goel Institute of Technology and Management was very supportive and it took fee in small installments considering my financial condition. I thank my father who never compromised on expenses on our education and worked extra hours to support us financially,” she added. “I want to pursue research. My aim is to open a good school in my village in Bihar so that no one needs to leave that place in search of good education,” Nandini said.
