LUCKNOW: Toughening his stand against anti-social elements in Lucknow University, vice-chancellor RP Singh expelled 38 students — two of them girls — on Wednesday on charges of instigating violence and indulging in vandalism on the campus. This is the biggest crackdown ever in the history of the university. Majority of expelled students were facing severe criminal charges.
More expulsions are expected on Thursday.
Those shown the doors include 30 student leaders who owe allegiance to various political parties — maximum 24 of them are from the ruling Samajwadi Party. Even political patronage of political top brass of the state could not save these student leaders, who had created an atmosphere of terror in the university through their violent activities in past three years. Expelled for the lifetime, these students will never be able to take admission in the Lucknow University again.Even students union office-bearers were not spared. LUSU president Bajrangi Singh Bajju, general secretary Vinod Tripathi and vice-president Brijesh Yadav have been thrown out along with former vice-president Pawan Pandey and two former general secretaries, Ram Singh Rana and Shiv Bhushan Singh. Other names in the list are Vijay Kumar Singh Tintu, Ranjit Singh Baghel and Neeraj Singh Baghel. The expelled girl student leaders are Aparna Singh and Sona Verma.University proctor AN Singh has informed the district magistrate and police about the decision apprehending a backlash from the students who have been expelled. The district administration has been reluctant so far to take action against these student leaders because of political pressure. The students have been communicated about their expulsions individually through post.In 1996, 19 students were expelled from the LU by the then vice-chancellor Prof SP Singh. Those expelled then included dreaded names like Abhay Singh and Dhananjay Singh, now politicians.
