Lucknow: Executive council of Lucknow University approved the institution of two new gold medals to promote academic excellence.
"The first medal, which will be awarded from the academic session 2025-26, will be the Prof SJH Abdi gold medal. It will be awarded annually to the student securing the highest marks in MA English at Canning College," said LU spokesperson Mukul Srivasatava. He said in case of a tie, the medal will go to the student with higher marks in the final semester examination. The medal is in memory of Prof SJH Abdi, a noted scholar who founded the Society for the Promotion of Indian English Literature. The medal was instituted by his wife, Nishat Akhtar Abdi.

Another new medal is Chandramani Singh gold medal, which will be awarded annually to the student securing the highest marks in the postgraduate (Jyotir Vigyan) examination. It was instituted by Deepak Singh in memory of his late father. LU VC Prof Jai Prakash Saini said, "New medals will strengthen students' enthusiasm and competitive spirit for academic excellence and support the university's tradition of motivating learners."
