‘Legal edu, court orders should be in language of common man’

Lucknow: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said here on Saturday that the legal profession as well as legal education should adopt the language which a common man understands.Addressing the law graduates at the third convocation of Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University on Saturday, Justice Chandrachud said: “I often discuss with educationists on ways to teach law in a simple way. If the fundamentals and basic principles of law are not explained in simpler terms to the general public, then there is definitely some flaw in the legal profession and legal education.”The CJI continued, “Judges and lawyers are well-versed in the English language, but a common man is not. English can’t translate the true love which a mother expresses to her child. At the other end of the spectrum, English can’t translate the crime committed in a fit of passion between two agriculturists who are neighbours.”Advising the RMLNLU to consider starting an LLB course in Hindi, the CJI said, “Laws related to regional issues should also be taught in our universities. For instance, if someone comes to the university's legal aid center from a nearby village with a land-related problem, and the student does not understand terms like ‘khasra’ and ‘khatauni’, how will they be able to help? Therefore, students should be educated about regional laws related to land.”
