NEW DELHI: The counting of votes is underway for the Kanpur Lok Sabha election 2024. The industrial city of Kanpur, located on the banks of the Ganges in Uttar Pradesh, was once celebrated as the "Manchester of the East" for its thriving textile industry. However, it has since lost this status and is now known as one of the most polluted cities in India.

Kanpur constituency went into polling in the fourth phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha election on May 13th. Voter turnout was recorded at 51.56 per cent.
Prominent candidates include Alok Misra (INC), Ramesh Awasthi (BJP) and, Kuldeep Bhadauriya (BSP).
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP's Satyadev Pachauri won the seat with 468,937 votes, while Congress's Sriprakash Jaiswal came in second with 313,003 votes. Similarly, in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, BJP's former president Murli Manohar Joshi defeated Sriprakash Jaiswal of Congress by a margin of 222,946 votes.

According to the 2011 Census, the total population of the Kanpur Lok Sabha seat is 2,226,317, with Scheduled Castes making up 11.72% and Scheduled Tribes 0.12% of the population. In addition to Brahmin, Vaishya, and Muslim voters, Punjabi voters also hold significant influence in this constituency.
The Kanpur parliamentary seat has approximately 166,392 Scheduled Caste (SC) voters, making up around 10.2% of the population. The Scheduled Tribe (ST) voters are approximately 6,525, around 0.4%. There are no rural voters in this seat (2011 census) with all 1,632,983 voters being urban, accounting for 100% of the electorate. The total number of voters in the 2019 Parliament Election was 1,631,296, with 1,529 polling booths.
The voter turnout for the Kanpur parliamentary seat in the 2019 election was recorded at 51.65%.
