KANPUR: The newly constituted Tanners Joint Front on Sunday accused the Jal Nigam of polluting river Ganga.
Members of the front, in a press conference, alleged that the Jal Nigam was misleading the public and the state government by concealing facts. The fact was that the Jal Nigam was discharging 130 MLD of untreated water every day into the river.
Mohd Sharif alleged that at the time when the second treatment plant was proposed it''s cost was estimated at Rs 7 crore.

Around 175 tanneries collected the amount and gave it to the Jal Nigam, he added. However, he further claimed that when after the completion of the plant the Jal Nigam put the construction cost at Rs 22 crore which was unexpected.
Sharif said that the Jal Nigam forced the tanneries to cough up the remaining amount. However, the tanneries moved the Apex court which pronounced that they would bear 10 per cent of the cost and the state government the remaining.
