Jailed Congress MP faces new FIR for threatening rape survivor’s kin

Lucknow: Another FIR was lodged against Congress MP Rakesh Rathore, who is in jail on rape charges, and his accomplice for allegedly threatening the survivor's family, in Sitapur on Thursday.Rathore was brought from jail under police protection and produced before the CJM court for remand proceedings. The court subsequently ordered judicial custody for the MP in this new case.The rape survivor's husband had filed a complaint with the principal secretary (Home) on Feb 10, alleging that the accused was consistently pressuring the victim and her family to settle the matter out of court through various threats.Sitapur SP Chakresh Mishra said that the police registered a case based on these allegations against Rathore and his accomplice Reshma Khatoon under the charges of section 351 (2) (criminal intimidation) of BNS.Meanwhile, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court heard Rathore's regular bail application on Thursday and directed the state govt to file its response in the matter. The next hearing is scheduled for Feb 24.An FIR was filed against Rathore at a police station in Sitapur on Jan 18 this year. On Jan 30, the MP was arrested on charges of raping the woman on the pretext of marriage and threatening her with consequences if she approached the police. The Allahabad HC rejected Rathore's anticipatory bail plea on Jan 29 and directed him to surrender within two weeks.
