lucknow: the indian acadamy of art and culture of lucknow, in association with surnai, a drama group of mumbai, held a press conference here on thursday evening in connection with their play goonj to be staged on march 8 at ganna sansthan auditorium to celebrate ‘international women’s day. zafar nabi, secretary of indian academy of art and culture along with the president of surnai ila arun and kk raina, director of the play answered the queries of mediapersons.
based on the original story ‘valley song’ of african writer athul fogart, the play focuses on the problem of generation gap and even tries to fill it. “i always have to take the shelter of english plays whenever i want to stage a good one as good playwright are lacking in hindi. first i go through at least 25 stories, select one or two and then adapt it in hindi and then the rest of the process takes off,� said raina, the director of the play. raina said the play has already been staged a number of times in mumbai. the character of the grand daughter shall be played by ishita arun, the talented daughter of singer ila arun. speaking on the pathetic condition of indian theatre, he said that unless the audience learns to purchase tickets, the sorry status quo will remain in the theatre arena.
