Independence clarion rose from Lucknow: Historian

Lucknow: Historical facts related to the rich past and tehzeeb (culture) of the city were shared by historian Roshan Taqui during a facebook live event organised by Lucknow Connection Worldwide on Saturday. Members Shoaib Quraishi, Rashmi Mishra and Shiksha Satsangi were present during the programme.
The first war of Independence began from the city on May 3, about a week before the government recorded its beginning from Meerut. “Several historians believe that because there were several small revolts during those days we cannot consider them as the beginning of the first war against British rule,” said Taqui.
He added, “We must accept that a tree grows where its seed was sown. The seed of independence struggle was sown in our city and it saw one of the longest wars of Independence. This is why it should be considered as the place of the beginning of war. Moreover, from children to the elderly, everybody in the city in those days was ready to fight the British forces,” said Taqui.
