was shot dead by an unidentified person covered in a shawl during morning walk near Globe Park in VVIP Hazratganj area on Sunday morning.

Ranjeet Bachan was walking along with his cousin Aditya Srivastava when the incident happened. Srivastava also sustained a bullet injury on his left arm. Police have lodged an FIR against an unidentified person under the charges of murder and attempt to murder. Senior police officials said that a sophisticated weapon was used in the act. Bacchan was also associated with Samajwadi Party till 2012 and has also been awarded by the Limca Book of records for cycling 7.5 lakh km.

Aditya first informed police about the incident around 6.15am after which a team reached the spot and took Bacchan to civil hospital. The doctors there declared him brought dead and referred Aditya to KGMU Trauma centre.

Lucknow joint commissioner of police, Naveen Arora told that Aditya who had sustained a bullet injury on his left arm in his statement to the police said that an unidentified man wearing a shawl came from behind, first snatched the mobile phone and later shot Bacchan to death.

"Somehow he managed to escape from the spot but while he was fleeing the miscreant opened fire on him," said Arora about Aditya. The officer also said that eight teams have been assigned to investigate the case.

Assistant commissioner of police, Hazratganj, Abhay Mishra said that Bacchan was shot in the head and slumped on the ground. Bachan was a resident of B-604, in OCR building. He had celebrated his birthday and also recited Sunderkand on February 1. Police also said that Bacchan was also associated with Samajwadi Party till 2012.

Meanwhile, in the evening, Kalindi, wife of the deceased, along with scores of supporters demanded UP CM Yogi Adityanath to come and offer compensation.
