Noted theatre personality Lalit Singh Pokhariya was recently conferred with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi (SNA) award for the year 2021 for his contribution in theatre by President Droupadi Murmu in Delhi. Pokhariya has popularised theatre in schools and colleges and has taught theatre to science and engineering students in workshops and has been working to promote theatre in the city since decades. “I believe hard work always gets recognised someday. It is because of the blessings of my guru Raj Bisaria and my parents that I have received such an honour. But it also gives a challenge to be more devoted, be more attentive towards your work,” says the Bhartendu Natya Akademi (BNA) alumni.
Having also been awarded with Senior Fellowship by Sangeet Natak Akademi in 2003-5, Pokhariya has been working extensively with Uttarakhand, Bundelkhand and Tharu tribal areas for theatrical experimentation with folk traditions. He shares, “I have done theatre not only because I know acting or direction but have chosen my work to have human and social significance so that I am able to help the people, especially the downtrodden and make society a better place. This is my way of contributing to society. And this award is proof of my efforts towards humanitarian causes.”
