Complex surgery by doctors from Balrampur Hospital cures two-year-old boy from rare spinal condition

Lucknow: Doctors at Balrampur Hospital successfully performed a complex surgery on a two-and-a-half-year-old boy named Aish, who was diagnosed with Tethered Cord Syndrome, a rare spinal condition affecting 1 out of 10,000 children. This marked the first time such a surgery was conducted at the govt district hospital in the city.Tethered Cord Syndrome takes place when the spinal cord, which typically ends at the L1 vertebra in the lower back, is pulled downward, affecting nerve functions and movement.In Aish's case, his spinal cord moved down to the S2 vertebra and was stuck in his lower hip bones, causing difficulties in walking and posing a risk of paralysis as he grew older.Aish's family, unable to afford the estimated Rs 2 lakh cost of surgery, sought treatment at Balrampur Hospital based on local recommendations.Dr Vinod Tiwari, a neurosurgeon at the hospital, confirmed that surgery was the only solution to free the tethered spinal cord.Dr Tiwari, along with a team of doctors, including Dr AS Chandel, Dr Mirza, and Dr Sumit, performed the surgery with the assistance of Dr Nirmala Mishra as anaesthesiologist and OT staff like Seema Shukla. The procedure, which lasted over four and a half hours, required precision due to the delicate nature of the condition.Post-surgery, Aish showed improvement in walking, and his recovery was monitored.Director of Balrampur Hospital, Dr Pawan Kumar, commended the medical team for their work. He also highlighted the importance of such surgeries in preventing long-term complications, including paralysis."The successful outcome of Aish's surgery demonstrated the hospital's growing expertise in handling rare medical conditions like Tethered Cord Syndrome," he added.
