LUCKNOW: In what could be the beginning of a new phase in the history of Lucknow University, riding high on their success rate in the PG admissions, the newly admitted girl students are now desperate to grab more power.
After conquering 60-70 per cent of the seats in admissions, they now want more representation for women in the students’ union, teachers’s association and the university management.

The boys are obviously nervous and some even jealous, but the girls want to see more women as teachers, an increased presence of women on the proctorial board and even have women occupy administrative posts including that of the Vice-Chancellor. "Clearly it is not just a matter of statistics that girls have scored better in the admissions, but we have to now look at the university with a totally different perspective," said Prof Nishi Pandey.
The real challenge is for theteachers, as they will get a more focussed and studious batch of students, in comparison to the ones they have been used to," she said. "Girls who have come on the basis of their merit will demand better academics and facilities and the onus will on the teachers (especially male) to not only teach them better but also learn to behave properly in the classroom," she said.
And what do the boys feel about it? While some tried to run down the achievements of the girls, others sounded rather numb. "Since most of the boys go for professional courses, the girls manage to get in, in herds in LU," remarked a visibly jealous Ravi Kant Singh, an MSc aspirant. Another added, "The boys will have a gala time with so many girls around".
Requesting anonymity one boy said, "I am thinking of dropping out". He has taken admission in ma (english), where 90 per students cent are girls.
