LUCKNOW: Resentment is brewing among students studying in the self-finance courses of the Lucknow University (LU) over hefty fee hike this session.
The university has decided that besides students taking admissions this year in various courses, the increased fees will also have to be paid by the students of undergraduate second and third years, as well as, postgraduate final year.

This has hit hard the students of self-finance courses as for them the annual fee hike is over Rs 2,000 to 3,000 per annum.
“We had taken admissions in BA courses last year when the fees was Rs 5,000, which has now been increased to Rs 7,000,” said Saumitra Singh, a BA II student. He said that students taking admission this year should be asked to pay hiked amount, while those who are studying since last over one year should be allowed to continue with the old fee structure.
Similar reactions came from the students of self-finance courses of BCom and BSc.
“We were not informed at the time of admissions last year that the fee will be increased from the next session. The fee increase should be implemented batch-wise,” said Anurag Kumar, BSc III. The demand also found favour with final year postgraduate students.
While university officers said that the fee hike is not ‘hefty’ as it comes out to be only Rs 166 to Rs 250 per month, parents said that they have to pay entire fees for an year in advance leaving their family budget in a disarray.

“I had to pay Rs 5,000 more in comparison to last year for my two sons studying in different courses,” said Farhad, a parent.
University authorities said that the decision to hike fees across the board was taken because of the financial crisis. Earlier, the fees was hiked in 2001.
However, in 2003, on the directions of the Mulayam government, the fees was rolled back to the levels of 1993, which resulted in a loss of Rs 5-6 crore per annum to the university.
