LU geoloist shares insights on Gangotri glacier

Lucknow: A ‘Geological overview of the Gangotri glacier area, Garhwal Himalaya' was presented by Lucknow University's geology department head, Prof Dhruv Sen Singh, during the 26th Prof SN Singh memorial lecture on Saturday.
Prof Singh's talk on his research covered varying retreat rates, tributary glacier interactions and importance of lateral moraines. He gave details on how environmental conditions influence glacier behaviour, noting that some glaciers advance despite climate changes. His research revealed significant fluvial activity near Gangotri glacier snout approximately 5,000 and 15,000 years ago, evidenced by kame terraces.
Participants paid tribute to Prof SN Singh, who established Palaeontological Society of India (PSI) and made contributions to Indian geology. Former department head and PSI president, Prof MP Singh spoke about Prof SN Singh. The event attracted scientists from across India, including PSI president Dr Rajiv Nigam. Dr Thijs Van Kolfschoten from the Netherlands, who previously led International Union for Quaternary Research (INQUA), was special international guest. TNN
