Engr returns home to gift village a learning treasure
Lucknow: A quiet story of change unfolded in Basdila village of Sant Kabir Nagar, where books are steadily reshaping young lives and aspirations.
The Basdila Community Library is a symbol of opportunity. four months, the library has grown into a thriving learning hub with 1,061 books and 317 registered members, mostly between ages of 5 and 25. For many, it is their first real access to a world beyond textbooks and classrooms.
The story begins from Mumbai, where Suhail Khan, an engineer from Mumbai University. Every summer, he would return to Basdila. “The village always gave me peace,” Khan recalls, “but as I grew older, I began to see the missing opportunities, exposure, and access to good learning resources.”
Building a career in private sector, Khan came across Jatin Lalit Singh, a young changemaker from Hardoi who had started a community library movement during the Covid-19 pandemic. Lalit’s initiative in Bansa village of Mallawan not only transformed local learning spaces but also earned mention by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in ‘Mann Ki Baat’.
Khan said, “Jatin started his library in 2020 when schools were shut.” Inspired by the vision of giving every village access to books, he reached out to Lalit, and together they brought the idea to life in Basdila in 2025.
For Lalit, Basdila library formed under his Aruna Mithlesh foundation, reflects a shared mission. “Suhail belonged to the village, moved out for studies and work, but never forgot his roots. This library is his way of giving back, and together we built it for the community,” he said.
Today, the library has three computers, toy library and diverse collection of reading material, a safe space where children gather to read, learn and ask questions.
Librarian Mariya, a BEd, said, “Children are developing reading habits, curiosity and confidence. Parents see hope — a belief that their children can aim higher,” she said.
“This is not just a library,” he said. “It is a space of hope and opportunity. If even a few children find direction here, it will all be worth it,” said Khan.
