Engineer gagged, beaten to death at his home in Sultanpur
LUCKNOW: An executive engineer with UP Jal Nigam (rural) was allegedly gagged and beaten two death at his rented home in Sultanpur on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Santosh Kumar, 52, a native of Prayagraj.
Kumar’s driver, Sandeep, who claimed to have witnessed the attack, has named an assistant engineer and an unedified man as accused. Police have detained the driver for questioning.
Sandeep told the police that Amit Kumar, an assistant engineer from Jal Nigam, along with another man came to Kumar’s home around 8.15am on Saturday and asked him to get ‘dahi-jalebi’ from a nearby shop. When Sandeep returned around 9.15am, he saw the two men thrashing Kumar who had been tied to a chair and gagged with a tape. When Sandeep raised an alarm, the two attackers fled.
Sandeep with the help of neighbours took an unconscious Kumar to the local medical college where he was declared brought dead.
Sultanpur SP Somen Barma said four police teams have been formed to nab the suspects. “We have also detained Sandeep for questioning to find the motive behind the murder,” Barma said.
A forensic team has collected evidence from the crime scene. Kumar’s brother Sanjay has filed an FIR for murder with the Kotwali Nagar police station against assistant engineer Amit Kumar, who hails from Madhubani in Bihar, and an unidentified man.
Sanjay told the police that Santosh Kumar had prepared a 250-page chargesheet against an agency working under the Jal Jeevan Mission, which was to be blacklisted.
Sanjay suspects that Amit Kumar, in collusion with others, may have orchestrated his brother’s murder in retaliation to the investigation and payment disputes.
