EC set to act against erring teachers

the allahabad university executive council in a landmark decision at the last week's meeting decided to take action against teachers indulging in private coaching and asked vice-chancellor g k mehta to work out its modalities and place the matter at the next meeting. since ec is the appointing authority, it has also to ensure that teachers do teach, pleaded senior member sunit vyas.justice a k yog as nominated member of ec was in agreement with vyas's suggestion which found wide support from the members. instead of the u p government taking initiative in the matter ec is itself competent as employer to take action against erring teachers, it was emphasised. this indeep is a good and legally sound step of the ec. it has now to be seen how it implements its decision. the ec is also consider to introduce bond of service incorporat ing classes which would bind teachers to devote their time and energy exclusively to class room teaching and research work. this will be a major step if implemented, it is felt. the ec also appointed prof h r singh, a senior teacher of geology department, as chairman of research degree committee and also chairman of house allotment committee. austerity in university explenditure was another issue which engaged the attention of the ec. a solitary example of expenses on telephone is sufficient to show extravagance of the au author ities. budget sanction under the telephone head is mere rs. 1.50 lakh while actual expenses were up to rs. 5 lakh annually. telephone and std facilities were available to those who were not entitled to it, it was pointed out. it is ironical to note that a committee formed by the ec to go into extravagant expenditure had reccommended that std facilities be withdrawn from majority of telephones. but the reccommenda tions were not implemented. if the vc has three telephones way std facilities be allowed on all the three, it is asked. some of the ec members questioned as to why special convocation was being held on the following day of deepawali ? the university was in fact founded on september 23, 1887. the university act was implemented, however, on november 15. but this does not mean that the foundation day date would be changed, it is argued. auta president yogeshwar tiwari questions, why this special convocation and why not a regular one ? the university academic session has been regularised and as such a regular convocation should have been held. convocation is a very important event in the university life of the students. the new comers on the campus anxiously wait for the event to feel the thrill of it. the university was depriving the students of their life-time pleasure, tiwari alleges.
