Lucknow: At least eight to 10 complaints of drunken brawls are made to city police every day and the daily average has increased over the years. Clashes originating after drinking sessions account for maximum number of complaints received by police control room. Drinking openly on roadside has turned into a habit for a large number of youths in the 20-to-30 age group.

On Friday night, son of a politician was detained by Hazratganj police for creating nuisance in a heavily inebriated state. The SUV did not bear registration number but had a red beacon. No action was taken against him.

Public drinking and roadside hooliganism can be checked only if local police take a strong stand against nuisance.

Eating points near Patrakarpuram crossing in Gomtinagar, Mithaiwala crossing, commercial complex opposite Ram Manohar Lohia hospital in Vibhuti Khand, Mahanagar post office crossing, Alambagh LDA market off Kanpur road, Baluadda in Hazratganj, market next to Tedhipulia crossing among others are points where tipplers can be seen drinking openly.

Vivek Khand II, Gomtinagar resident Sudha Tripathi said, "If district administration accepts there is a problem, it should take suo moto action or direct local police to do so." She added, "How can a family person click photographs of rowdy youths for evidence? Nobody is going to risk their own safety sending photographs of goondas on WhatsApp. We have complained regularly in the past but nothing changed."
