Docs perform kidney transplant on HIV patient

Lucknow: A living-donor kidney transplant on a 41-year-old HIV-positive patient was successfully conducted at Max Super Speciality Hospital.

Diagnosed with HIV in 2018, the patient later developed end-stage renal disease and had been on dialysis since 2023. Despite ongoing antiretroviral therapy, he faced difficulty finding a transplant centre willing to take up the case.

In Jan 2026, he was referred to the hospital, where a multidisciplinary team led by Dr Venkatesh Thammishetty, along with urologists Dr Rahul Yadav and Dr Aditya Kumar Sharma, carried out an evaluation.

His HIV treatment was carefully adjusted to align with post-transplant requirements.

His wife volunteered as the donor, and after compatibility tests, the transplant was performed successfully. The patient recovered steadily and was discharged within a week. He no longer requires dialysis.

Doctors said such procedures require precise planning, strict protocols and close monitoring, but they can deliver positive outcomes. Both the donor and recipient are stable, with the patient gradually resuming normal life under a supervised regimen.
