According to police, Meera claimed that Abhijeet had arrived home in an inebriated state and assaulted her following a heated exchange of words. She pushed him banging his head against the wall after which she strangled him.
Earlier, Meera had claimed that she went into Abhijeet's room at around 7.30am and found him dead. She had refused to lodge a complaint and was so keen on not getting the postmortem done that she rushed the body for cremation, but it was intercepted by police near NBRI crossing around 12.30pm and taken for autopsy.
Hazratganj police lodged an FIR under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (destruction of evidence) against unidentified persons. The deceased Abhijeet was son of Ramesh Yadav from his second wife Meera. "The post mortem was conducted on intervention of the highest authority in police," said a senior officer.
"The family did not inform us about the death. We were informed by a mediaperson at 11am. There was minor injury mark on Abhijeet's neck and head. We have collected the footage from CCTVs," SP East Sarvesh Kumar Mishra told TOI.

‘Mother wasn’t ready to send body for autopsy’
Senior police officials and a team of scientists from Forensic Science Lab (FSL) reached the spot at 4.15pm and collected evidence. Abhijeet was a student of BSc Ist year.
Meera used to live in flat number 137, New B-Block, allotted to Ramesh Yadav with her two sons Abhijeet and Abhishek. She said that Abhishek had gone out for some work previous night and had not returned home.
Abhishek told police that he was informed about the incident by his mother Meera and reached the flat around 10am. “Abhijeet was lying dead in the room,” he told police.
SHO Hazratganj Radha Raman Singh told TOI, “When somebody informed us from Darul Shafa about the death, we reached the spot. The family was not ready to get the autopsy done and was sending the body for conducting the last rites.”
“Meera told us that she thought that Abhijeet had died of heart attack and hence did not want the autopsy done,” added SHO Hazratganj. Vidhan Parishad chairman Ramesh Yadav, accompanied by other son Abhishek, reached Baikunth Dham at around 7pm for the last rites of Abhijeet. Yadav chose to keep mum when media asked questions regarding the mysterious death of Abhijeet.
Later, a police team again reached Yadav’s official residence around 9.30pm to question the family members. Police were still questioning the family when last reports came in.
A washerman who irons clothes in Darul Shafa, on condition of anonymity, told TOI that Abhijeet had met him on Saturday and was looking completely fine. “ He was a good human being. Though he used to consume alcohol occasionally, but he was always good to me,” he added.
