Cops bust gang of auto-lifters

Police on Friday arrested five members of an inter-state gang of auto-lifters and recovered 12 stolen motorcycles at their instance. Three of the motorcycles were traced to have been lifted from Aliganj, Talkatora and Kanpur. Efforts were on to trace the ownership of the remaining nine motorcycles on the basis of their chassis and engine number records.

LUCKNOW: Police on Friday arrested five members of an inter-state gang of auto-lifters and recovered 12 stolen motorcycles at their instance. Three of the motorcycles were traced to have been lifted from Aliganj, Talkatora and Kanpur. Efforts were on to trace the ownership of the remaining nine motorcycles on the basis of their chassis and engine number records.
Lucknow police chief, deputy inspector general of police (DIG) DK Thakur, said that arrests were made on the basis of a specific input.

As per the gang's own admission, they have lifted more than 500 motorcycles within a period of last two years from dozen districts of Uttar Pradesh. They had operated outside UP as well. ssThe gang used to sell the stolen motorcycles exclusively in Nepal and confessed to have sold away quite a few of them to the Maoists as well. The arrested accused were identified as Gokaran Nishad, Vinod Rawat and Shiv Kumar Nishad - all hailing from Faizabad along with Naate Chai of Lucknow and Naresh of Nepal.
Police are confident that the arrests will have a direct impact on auto-lifting in the state capital where the gang was quite active till their arrest.
