LUCKNOW: Taking the initiative to boost rural tourism in the state, the UP government has appointed consultants to conduct a survey of districts selected for the first phase.
The government has started a mega campaign to identify places of interest and exploration in each district.
As part of the project, popular villages in the districts will be developed for rural tourism pursuits.
"The idea is to create employment locally while diversifying the bouquet of choices for tourists and visitors," said principal secretary tourism Mukesh Meshram.
He added that during the pandemic, travelling by road recorded a surge.
Travelling on long weekends and hitting at weekend getaways is also popular among the youth.
"The trend is an opportunity and the government aims to to it," Meshram said, adding that the district culture and tourism boards are also in place to take the work forward.
To be extended across all the 75 districts, the scheme will take off in 18 districts in the first phase.
The selected cities and their surveyors are: Lucknow and Lakhimpur Kheri - Academy of Management Studies; Mathura and Aligarh - Adarsh Seva Samiti; Agra and Firozabad - Atharva Planning and Research Center Private Limited; Varanasi and Azamgarh - Bakri Chhap Agro Tourism and Natural Products Private Limited; Prayagraj and Bhadohi - Ernest & Young LLP, Gorakhpur and Kushinagar - Chemis Connect, Jhansi and Lalitpur - Node Urban Lab LLP, Ayodhya and Barabanki - Schoolnet India Limited; Chitrakoot and Banda - Social Association for Nurturing Nighting and Linking People (SANKALP).
Meshram said: "The surveyors will first identify the villages to be brought on the tourism map and next come up with a tourism development and promotion plan."
