GORAKHPUR: Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar Saturday said compromising on nationalism would be a betrayal to the country and those who do so are deceiving the nation.

"Wherever anyone threatens the integrity of the nation, we must not tolerate it. Today, there is a need for ideological tenacity, purity of basic thoughts and propagation of national sentiment," Dhankhar said.

He was speaking after inaugurating a Sainik School in Gorakhpur. He emphasized that Article 370, which was introduced as a temporary provision in the Constitution, was wrongly understood by some to be permanent, and its abrogation in recent times has brought positive changes to the region.

Highlighting that duty towards the nation must always be kept above self and political interest, Dhankar warned that failure to do so would amount to an attack on India’s civilisational ethos spanning several millennia.

Maintaining that “today’s India isn’t the country it wasa decade ago,” Dhankhar said he vividly remembers a time when India, once known as the ‘Golden Bird’, had to physically transport its gold to two Swiss banks due to critically low foreign exchange reserves, which were 1-2 billion US dollars.

Today, he highlighted, India's foreign exchange reserves have grown to over 650-660 bil-lion dollars, signifying the nation's remarkable progress.

Expressing his emotions, the Vice-President said he was deeply touched and overjoyed to be part of the Sainik School inauguration ceremony. The occasion brought back memories from six decades ago when he was a student at a Sainik School himself.
