Chargesheet filed against KGMU doc in conversion case
Lucknow: The Chowk police on Friday filed a chargesheet against former junior resident of King George's Medical University (KGMU), Rameezuddin, his father Salimuddin (70), mother Khateja (67), and aide, Shariq Khan. Rameezuddin has been charged with rape, forced abortion, and coercion for religious conversion, while his parents and Shariq have been charged with harbouring and aiding in coercion and religious conversion. Rameezuddin alias Rameez (31), a resident of Pilibhit, was arrested near City Station in Lucknow on Jan 9.
According to DCP (West Zone) Vishwajeet Srivastava, a case was registered at Chowk police station after a junior woman doctor at KGMU filed a written complaint accusing her senior colleague of sexually exploiting her over a prolonged period on the false promise of marriage. The survivor alleged that the accused repeatedly raped her, forced her to undergo an abortion, and coerced her into religious conversion. Based on her complaint, police registered an FIR under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 3 and 5 of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021. During the course of the investigation, police uncovered similar allegations involving another woman medical student from Agra. She accused the doctor of sexual assault, forced conversion, and coercion leading to miscarriage. Investigators said both survivors recorded their statements before a magistrate, alleging that not only the accused doctor but also his family members were actively involved in pressuring them to convert and facilitating the abortions. Following these revelations, police named additional accused in the case, including Rameez's father, mother, and Shariq Khan. The parents were arrested on January 5 from a rented accommodation in Thakurganj and subsequently sent to judicial custody. Police said the parents played a key role in influencing and coercing the victims.
