LUCKNOW: Police on Tuesday busted a gang of thugs, which included three women, who used to visit jewellery shop posing as customer and lift ornaments.
And, it was their typical salaried-class housewives' appearance, which duped the jewellers. The women were identified as Raatrani, her sisters-in-law Uma Tiwari and Renu Tiwari, and Uma's husband
Rajendra Tiwari, all native of Hardoi district.
In Lucknow, Raatrani had a house in Thakurganj, where the gang used to stay.
"After lifting the ornaments, they used to sell it to a jeweller Satyanarain alias Sattu, who paid them money in exchange and subsequently used to melt the ornament. Sattu, however, is absconding," circle officer Alok Kumar said and added that efforts are on to nab him.
The police have also recovered a cash of Rs 31,000 from their possession.
With their arrest, the police claimed to have worked out a case of theft that took place on November 11 at Ratnrashi Jewellers in Ghazipur police station area. Interestingly, their act of theft at Ratnrashi Jewellers was caught on camera, which helped the police identify the miscreants.
As per their modus operandi, the gang members including men and women members used to target a jewellery shop in a crowded market. The women members then used to go inside the jewellery shop as customers while men used to keep a watch standing outside the shop. In the name of purchasing jewellery, the women used to ask the jewellers to show them some ornaments. While posing to select the jewellery, the women thugs used to lift some ornaments and subsequently concealed the same in their clothes. After some time, they used to leave the shop.
The gang did the same thing on November 11 at Ratnrashi Jewellers in Ghazipur police station area. They lifted a pair of gold bangles and fled. However, their act was caught on CCTV camera installed in the shop. The footage actually helped the cops in identifying the gang members who were finally nabbed following a tip-off near Amrapali Crossing.
Raatrani and Renu had earlier gone to jail for lifting ornaments from a jeweller's shop in Hardoi.
