Car thief runs over cops, flees when SUV stuck

Lucknow: A criminal in a stolen SUV attempted to run over police personnel before jumping out of the vehicle and running away, late Saturday night in Gonda. The suspect attacked a head constable with a revolver butt, rammed through multiple police barricades, before abandoning the vehicle near the Visuhi River bridge.
The SUV belonged to Israr Ahmed, district panchayat member and contractor from Siddharthnagar. Around 4pm on Saturday, Ahmed parked his vehicle near the Itwa block office to offer namaz, leaving his mobile phone and licensed revolver inside. On returning, he found the vehicle missing and lodged police complaint.
Police set up roadblocks after receiving reports that the suspect was heading toward Gonda. Around 12:05am, a team led by SSI Umesh Singh attempted to intercept the SUV at Kati trisection railway crossing, but the car thief crashed through the barricades, forcing officers to dive into roadside ditches. A second interception attempt at Kudasan Bazaar-Dhanepur trisection failed too.
During the chase, the SUV got stuck in a police barrier near the Visuhi River bridge, after which, the suspect jumped out and escaped . Inspector Manoj Pathak confirmed recovery of the vehicle and registered a case against the unidentified accused. A search operation is underway.
