BTech boy who loses 28k dies by suicide
Kanpur: A BTech student allegedly died by suicide at his home in Kanpur after losing Rs 28,000 in a cyber fraud.
The victim, Tanay, had joined a coaching centre for SSC examination in the city and also gave tuitions to schoolchildren, said his father Santosh Kumar Sagar. Tanay was pursuing BTech second year in biotechnology from a private college in Kanpur.
Tanay had been in touch with a woman from Noida over phone for the past two months who took money from him by promising work-from-home prospects, said Santosh. He was also in talks with some other persons to explore work from home options, said Santosh.
The woman convinced him to transfer amounts of Rs 5,000, Rs 2,000, Rs 16,000 and another Rs 5,000 via UPI. After receiving Rs 28,000, she demanded an additional Rs 5,000. When Tanay approached his elder brother for the transfer, the latter understood it was a fraud and declined to give money.
The father said the woman kept pestering Tanay for more money and that drove him to suicide.
Inspector Manoj Singh Bhadauria said, "We are examining the youth's laptop, mobile phone and other gadgets. A team has been sent to Noida to trac the woman."
