Breathless after walk? Could be SOS from heart: Experts
Lucknow: Those experiencing breathlessness or difficulty while walking often consult respiratory specialists, but such symptoms may also point to underlying heart disease, said experts at a pre-event programme held ahead of CARDICON 2026, a 2-day national cardiology conference beginning Feb 13 at King George's Medical University.Speakers said heart and lungs functioned in close coordination and if persistent breathlessness did not improve with initial treatment, it should be evaluated by cardiologist. Early identification of cardiac causes behind respiratory complaints is critical for timely diagnosis and intervention.
More than 200 cardiologists and medical professionals are expected to attend the conference, organised by Cardiology Society of India at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Scientific Convention Centre on the KGMU campus. Deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak will inaugurate the cardiologists' meet.Addressing a press conference at Lari Cardiology Department, head of cardiology department, Prof Rishi Sethi, said, "Heart disease is rising rapidly, driven largely by lifestyle factors." He said increased intake of fast food and sugary drinks, along with reduced physical activity, was adding to the burden, noting that heart attacks were now being reported in younger age groups and vascular blockages were frequently detected. He added that newer technologies were improving treatment outcomes. Laser-assisted procedures can remove arterial blockages with greater precision, and the department is in the process of procuring a laser system to expand such services.Organising secretary Prof Akshay Pradhan said the conference would host cardiologists, physicians and researchers, with sessions focusing on advances in treatment, new drugs, diagnostic tools and evolving management protocols. Discussions will also address cardiac complications during pregnancy, alongside live case demonstrations, lectures and panel deliberations.Prof Gaurav Chaudhary highlighted diabetes, kidney disease, hypertension and obesity as major cardiac risk factors, advising daily physical activity of 10,000 to 12,000 steps. Dr Akhil Sharma stressed diet control, weight management and avoidance of sedentary habits as key preventive measures.Organisers said the conference aims to update clinicians on current evidence and strengthen practice through shared expertise.
