LUCKNOW: Main opposition party in Uttar Pradesh, BJP has decided to file a petition with the Election Commission to complain against Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav for violating model code of conduct.
Taking serious note of Mulayam announcing free power supply to farmers on the eve of by-polls, the BJP Legislature Party Leader Lalji Tandon said that it was an attempt to woo the electorate.
1x1 polls
"It is a blatant violation of model code of conduct. If the Election Commission did not take suo motu notice then the BJP would petition the commission demanding action against the chief minister for making announcements that influenced the mind of the electorate," said Tandon.
The BJP is trying to obtain the audio/video tapes and newspaper cuttings of Mulayam''s election speeches to support its charges. "We would submit material evidence to the commission to prove our charges," said Tandon.
Tandon also charged Mulayam government with planning to repeat Lok Sabha polls during by-polls on October 13. "Free and fair polls are not possible under Mulayam regime. If the commission does not take effective steps, large-scale booth capturing is possible again," stated Tandon.
BJP state incharge Kalyan Singh too aired similar views. "He (Mulayam) could have waited till October 14 to promise free power supply. It was a deliberate attempt to woo farmers on the eve of by-polls," he said.
Welcoming the commission''s move to appoint three DIGs in Mainpuri, Ahirauri (Hardoi) and Baghra (Muzaffarnagar) as special observers, the party state incharge claimed that it had vindicated BJP''s apprehensions that the ruling coalition had planned rigging and violence to win polls at any cost.
