LUCKNOW: BJP on Wednesday named party national

general secretary

Arun Singh as its candidate for

Rajya Sabha bypoll

in Uttar Pradesh.

The seat has been vacated by SP MLA Tazeen Fatima, wife of SP MP Azam Khan. She had resigned from the seat to contest Rampur assembly bypoll which she won.

Singh is expected to get elected unopposed given the present strength of BJP in UP Assembly and a divided Opposition — SP, BSP and Congress are no more supporting each other. If elected, his tenure will be till November 25, 2020.

BJP nominees Neeraj Shekhar, Sanjay Seth, Surendra Nagar and Sudhanshu Dwivedi were also elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from UP in the bypolls held a few months ago. They had resigned from the Samajwadi Party to join the BJP. Sudhanshu Trivedi was elected from the seat which fell vacant following the demise of former finance minister Arun Jaitley.

The last date for filing nomination is December 2 and for withdrawing nomination is December 5. If necessary, the election will be held on December 12 and the result will be declared the same day. If the Opposition does not field any candidate then the result will be announced on December 5.
