MEERUT: Lawrence Bishnoi gang member Jeetu, alias Jitendra Singh, wanted in the contract killing of a Ghaziabad-based trader, was killed in an encounter with a team of Noida STF and local police in Mundali region of Meerut district on Wednesday, said police.
An STF Noida team was carrying out surveillance when they received information about Jeetu's movement in Meerut. Brijesh Kumar Singh, additional SP of UP STF, said, "During the operation, Jeetu and an accomplice were on a motorcycle and when police intercepted them, they opened fire, prompting the police team to retaliate. Jeetu was critically injured while his accomplice escaped. A pistol and a carbine were recovered from the shootout site. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead."
Police said Jitendra, a resident of Asonda Siwan, Haryana, was sentenced to life imprisonment on Feb 3, 2018, in a 2016 double murder case, in which he killed one Mohd Asood and a family member in Bahadurgarh.
He was released on parole in 2023, but he absconded and started working with Bishnoi gang member Rohit Godara, said police.
On Oct 22, 2023, he and his accomplices fired six bullets at Ghaziabad trader Pramod Kasana, killing him instantly. Police on July 12, 2024, announced a bounty of Rs 1 lakh for information leading to his capture.
Jeetu had several criminal cases against him, including a 2016 robbery at Kanjhawala in Delhi and a theft case in Bahadurgarh of Haryana. He was convicted in the theft case and sentenced to imprisonment until 2024. He was also convicted in a 2016 Bahadurgarh robbery case and was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Aug 29, 2018. Additionally, he was accused of looting in Jhajjar in 2016. His criminal activities continued into 2023 when he was involved in a car robbery in Rohtak on April 6.
