LUCKNOW: Bike taxis would be another mode of transport available in UP soon. Noida might be the first to have in place for the bike taxis. The transport department has paved the way for the bike taxis to operate.
Transport commissioner K Ravinder Naik has issued a circular directing the State Transport Authority (STA) to issue permit to operators interested in running bike taxis in cities, but not without laying down strict conditions.
"Wearing helmet would be mandatory for the driver and pillion rider. If any of the two is caught without helmet, permit would be cancelled," said transport commissioner. The department, so far, has received a proposal from an operator who is interested in running about 100 bike taxis in Noida.
Besides, the department is also willing to encourage women operators who wish to get into the operation of bike taxis.
The fare prescribed for motor cabs would be applicable to bike taxis as well. The bike owners will have to pay one time tax to start operations. The maximum fare for motor cabs is Rs 10 per km. The operator will not charge more than that.
The fare and safety features would be decided once the proposal gets approved.
