NEW DELHI: Family members of Ramgopal Mishra, a victim of violence in Bahraich, have demanded severe punishment for those responsible for his death.
Mishra's sister, Priti, expressed a strong desire for justice, stating, "I want the culprits to be punished. He (deceased) was hit by 15 bullets. I want the culprits to be hanged till death and their houses should be demolished."
Additionally, Pramod Kumar, a relative of Mishra, criticized the state police for their negligence, which he believes led to Mishra's death. He also called for compensation for Mishra's widow.
Kumar stated, "If we had got protection from the police then this wouldn't have happened...We demand that the culprits should be punished and relevant ex gratia to be given to the wife of Ramgopal Mishra."
Ramgopal Mishra lost his life and several others were injured following a clash between two communities during a Durga idol immersion procession in Mahasi, Bahraich district, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday. The clash began when the procession passed through a Muslim area and arguments ensued.
Bahraich Superintendent of Police, Vrinda Shukla, explained the situation: "In Mahasi's Maharajganj area, a procession was passing by a Masjid through a Muslim area. The groups argued on some issues. A person from the Hindu community died after bullets were fired at him and thereafter a tense situation arose."
In response to the incident, the police have taken 30 people into custody and registered a case. Efforts are underway to apprehend the main suspect who remains at large.
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has taken note of the situation and stressed that those responsible will face strict action. He assured safety for all and instructed local administration and police officials to ensure the continuation of idol immersions while maintaining communication with religious organizations.
"Those who spoil the atmosphere in Mahsi of Bahraich district will not be spared...Administration and police officials have been directed to be present on the spot and communicate with religious organizations to ensure that the immersion of idols is done on time," Adityanath stated on X.
