‘An emperor who championed causes’
Bahadur Shah Zafar emerged as a benevolent ruler who stood by his people, intervening against British injustices even as his political power waned, said Rana Safvi in an insightful conversation.Safvi discussed how Zafar, despite losing political power, remained a benevolent ruler who stood by his people and intervened against British injustices. Safvi said, "Known for his poetry, Sufi beliefs, and love for the arts, Zafar was a compassionate ruler who worked to protect marginalised communities in Delhi and promoted equality among religious groups. His reign, although marked by the decline of the Mughal Empire, was a time of cultural growth and creativity."Safvi emphasised how Zafar's efforts to maintain cultural identity and dignity during British rule reflected his empathy and resilience. She also highlighted decline of royal patronage for traditional arts during his time, which affected India's cultural heritage.Through her discussion, Safvi reminded the audience of the importance of preserving India's pluralistic traditions and cultural legacy. She encouraged a deeper appreciation for Zafar's contributions, urging recognition of his efforts to foster unity and creativity in a time of great adversity.
