‘Awareness boosts organ donation’
Lucknow: Organ donation from brain-dead patients can save many lives, but awareness and family counselling are key to encouraging this noble act.
This was stated by experts during a workshop at RMLIMS on Saturday.
Head of surgical gastroenterology at KGMU Prof Abhijeet Chandra said one brain-dead patient can save or improve up to eight lives through organ donation and enhance the lives of many more people through tissue donation.
Prof Abhilash Chandra, head of the nephrology department at RMLIMS, said organ donation rates in the state are very low while many patients in need of kidneys, liver and other organs are struggling between life and death.
RMLIMS director Prof CM Singh said regular awareness programmes are essential to promote organ donation. The workshop was attended by Dr Afzal Azim, Dr Rajesh Harshvardhan, Dr Amol Bhavane from AIIMS Nagpur, and the event's organising secretary, Dr Namrata Rao, along with others. TNN
