SANT KABIR NAGAR: Wails of anguish rent the atmosphere at the site where the Gorakhdham Express derailed and rammed into a stationary freight train near Cherub railway station here on Monday.
The engine was smashed in the accident. The assistant driver died on the spot. Many passengers travelling in the general coach immediately after the engine died.
Human limbs lay scattered on the tracks.Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Government Railway Police and
Railway Protection Force jawans carried out the rescue work. Rescuers used gas cutters and cranes to pull out the victims from inside the bogies.
"The accident scene was scary and heartbreaking," said
Vineet Saxena, a social worker. "The coaches were smashed badly and workers are using cutters and cranes to take out passengers. The passengers who were safe were the first to help the victims. Villagers reached the site to extend help. The district administration and SSB jawans too reached there. But the railway rescue team reached late." Some NGOs reached the accident site with first-aid boxes, tea and snacks.
"I work in a factory in Delhi and was on way to Gorakhpur with my friends," said Raghuvir Yadav, a resident of Baniyanpur, Chhapra, who was travelling in the coach behind the engine. "The train was running at a good speed. Around 10am I heard a deafening sound. I fell on the seat and became unconscious. When I regained consciousness, I found all those around me in the coach were dead. My friends are lost."
A four-year-old girl was found crying and alone. Since she was unable to tell anything about her parents, district officials took charge of her for the time being.
