LUCKNOW: This Sunday was certainly different as far as Lucknow Cantonment is concerned. Army officers and jawans saluted the sacrifice of Captain Manoj Pandey, 17 years after he was martyred during the Kargil conflict.
The main programme was held at Captain Manoj Pandey Chowk, near Race Course in Lucknow Cantonment. Brigadier Pankaj Singh, Commandant of 11 Gorkha Regimental Centre, laid the wreath in presence of parents of Captain Manoj Pandey.
Captain Manoj Pandey's native place was Rudha village in UP’s Sitapur district. An alumnus of the Lucknow Sainik School and a pass out from National Defence Academy, Manoj Pandey got commissioned into 1/11 Gorkha Rifles in Jun 1997. He was platoon commander during Operation Vijay in Kargil.
On early morning of July 3, 1999, Manoj Pandey, while displaying great courage, surged ahead of his troops and charged the enemy with a full throated battle cry through a hail of bullets. Despite getting a fatal burst on his head, he neutralised the enemy and provided a critical firm base for his companies, which finally led to capture of Khalubar.
He was posthumously awarded Param Vir Chakra for displaying most conspicuous bravery, indomitable courage, outstanding leadership and supreme sacrifice of life.
