VARANASI: Anjana Prakash, with a solid socialist background, has become the first woman candidate to contest Lok Sabha election from Varanasi.
By fielding Prakash, Samajwadi Party too is making the first serious attempt to win this prestigious seat.
Local political observers feel that, hailing from a well-known freedom fighter family, she not only has the capacity to attract voters, but also the power to make a dent in the Bhumihar vote bank, which constitute about 11.63 per cent.
This, they feel, could upset the calculations of BJP and Congress candidates.
During a three-decade political career, she has had many more firsts. Anjana Prakash also became the the first office-bearer of the students union of Banaras Hindu University (BHU), when she was elected vice-president. She, along with her husband, Shatrudh Prakash, former UP minister, has been struggling since the time of emergency.
