LUCKNOW: The high court has taken cognisance of a liquor shop in a residential area in Balaganj on Hardoi Road.

The shop is in the vicinity of a school, hospital and temple.

A bench of Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Vivek Varma asked the state counsel to seek instructions from the government on the action being taken in this regard. The next hearing is on December 15.

The bench passed the order on a PIL moved by lawyer

The petitioner told the bench that the state government has granted licence for running the said liquor shop. The shop, which is in a residential area, is also located very close to a school, hospital and a temple frequented by women, children and devotees.

“As per provisions of the UP Number and Location of Excise Shop Rules 1968, this shop cannot be situated at the location. It is being run by an influential person of the area,” the petitioner pleaded.

Taking cognizance of the issue, the bench directed the standing counsel to obtain instructions in the matter from the government by the next date.
