UP: Akhilesh Yadav meets family of Unnao rape victim

LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party national president Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday met the kin of the

rape victim

who self-immolated at the office of

superintendent of police

at Unnao on December 16. He gave

monetary assistance

of Rs 5 lakh to the family members and assured them of all help in the meeting which lasted for around 30 minutes.



Talking to media he said, "The BJP does exactly opposite of everything that they give slogan to. It has given slogan of '

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao

' but the truth is that instead of studying, daughters are now forced to commit suicide."

He said it is the second such incident in Unnao. "The daughter was demanding justice which she failed to get and was forced to give her life. The state government has no moral right to remain in office as it has failed to provide security to the daughters as promised."

The 23-year-old rape survivor had accused the police of not acting on her complaint against the accused, Avadesh Singh. On December 16, the woman walked into the SP's office with her body in flames. She had poured kerosene on herself and lit a match. She had suffered 70% burns and succumbed to her injuries at Lala Lajpat Rai hospital at Kanpur on Saturday night.
