Akhilesh demands CBI probe into Hardoi woman’s murder, seeks action against erring cops

Lucknow: Demanding a CBI inquiry into the killing of a girl in Hardoi on April 13, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday said the policemen who overlooked life threats to the victim should be sacked.

Akhilesh called upon the 27-year-old victim -- Shilpi Kushwaha’s -- family at their Hardoi residence and handed over a cheque of Rs 5 lakh to them and assured them of all possible help to get justice.

He spoke to Shilpi’s parents and her two brothers at length.

“The hapless daughter could sense that there was a threat to her life. She went to the police station a number of times to inform them about it. The district police chief was informed. But Shilpi could not get justice. Those responsible should be punished severely. Services of the guilty police officers should be terminated,” Akhilesh said.

“We also demand a CBI probe into the murder and the lapses that led to the crime. I will write a formal letter demanding a CBI probe because this is what Shilpi’s family want,” Akhilesh said, adding that any ex gratia cannot fill the void left behind by Shilpi’s death but will help the family to pursue their struggle to seek justice for their daughter.

A resident of Garhi Rasoolpur in Mallawan police circle of Hardoi, Shilpi was murdered on April 13 and on the basis of the written complaint of the family, a local youth, Rishab Trivedi, and his father, Promod, were arrested.

Later, the district police chief suspended inspector in-charge of Mallawan police station for dereliction of duty after it came to light that the victim had repeatedly informed the police about threats to her life, but the police did not take any action.

“There were reports that the policemen misinformed their seniors that they had resolved Shipli’s complaint. These policemen should be identified and punished because the lie claimed a daughter’s life,” Akhilesh said.

He said crime against women was on the rise across Uttar Pradesh where the poor and the deprived were left to fend for themselves, with the police, backed by BJP govt, turning a blind eye to such incidents.
