Lucknow: Priyanka Goswami, an office superintendent posted in the Izzatnagar railway division of NER in Bareilly, on Saturday created history by becoming the first Indian woman to win a medal in race-walking and the second athlete to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games in race-walking.
Priyanka (26) covered the 10,000 mt race walk in 49 minutes and 38 seconds to fetch the silver and brought India’s medal tally to 27 at Commonwealth Games 2022.
After winning the medal, she said, “I’m very proud that the national flag soared because of me, I’m also elated to have won the first medal in women’s race-walking in CWG for India. I dedicate my medal to my ‘Laddoo Gopal’ and my family.”
“Asian games and Olympics are my next goal”, said Priyanka. Before Priyanka, Harminder Singh had clinched a bronze medal back in the 2010 CWG in the 20 km race-walk.
Apart from her personal best in the 10,000m race event, Priyanka also holds the national record in women’s 20km race-walking.
