After 55 years, Bengali Club welcomes public for Mahalaya

was opened to public for the first time on Friday since the ritual started 55 years ago.

Devotees from across the city gathered at one of the oldest durga pandals at the club to recite Mahalaya and mark the homecoming of Ma Durga on Shashti."We are the only ones to organise Mahalaya for all. Earlier, it was limited to committee members only," said Arun Kumar Banerjee, president, Bengali Club. Over 500 people were present for Chandi Path which was recited for 1 hour and 50 minutes beginning 4am. People came together to sing, dance and soak in the joyous spirit of Durga puja at the Sharodiya Durgotsava of Bengali Club. Traditional Dhak players had come all the way from Malda Gaon to play the instrument on all the puja days.

Goddess' first look: Devotees got to get the first glimpse of Durga idol at various pandals of the city after 'pran pratishtha' on Shashti which fell on Friday. While some pandals chose to begin the puja with Chandi path in the morning, some opted for pran pratishtha in the evening. Several pandals organised cultural programs and anand mela for the devotees.
