BAREILLY: An 85-year-old woman was allegedly raped and murdered by a 35-year-old drunk man at a village in Bareilly's Hafizganj on Monday.
Police said the octogenarian died during the sexual assault and the man was charged under BNS sections 333 (house trespass with intent to hurt) and 66 (
rape causing death or persistent vegetative state). He was later arrested.
The woman from a minority community used to live alone after the death of her husband and elder son. Her sister-in-law and other kin live in the same locality and took care of her. On Monday afternoon, Rakesh Kumar, who lives in the same village, barged into her house, locked the room and raped her.
Her sister, who used to visit her daily, said, “I met her and she told me she needs food and water. After a while, when I arrived with water, I found the house locked from inside. I asked my daughter and neighbour’s son to open the door after climbing down from the roof. When they entered, they saw Kumar sexually assaulting her. We alerted neighbours and he was caught.”
A local resident added, "People of both communities caught Kumar and roughed him up before handing him over to police. He is a potter and is drunk most of the time."
Additional SP, Mukesh Chandra Mishra, said, “SHO Hafizganj received a complaint that an 85-year-old woman was raped by a local villager. As a result of the sexual assault, the woman died. We've arrested the accused and are questioning him. The body was sent for autopsy and a report is awaited. People in the village are angry but the situation is under control."
