Lucknow: A 56-year-old housewife-turned-athlete, Asha Singh, who took to marathon running just by chance in 2016, is set to participate in the 2022 Abbott World Marathon Major (WMM) Wanda Age Group World Championship, in London, on October 2.
Wife of a retired army man, Col Bajrang Singh, a resident of Eldeco Colony on Rae Bareli road, Asha said she developed interest in athletics after meeting a woman athlete during a routine walk in a park.
“She had participated in many marathon events and after talking to her I got inspired to participate in such an event. In 2016, I participated in a 10km marathon for the first time and won a medal,” Asha said.
“I can’t explain how happy I was after receiving my first medal. I have seen my husband winning medals in the army and my children winning in school competitions, but this feeling was different. Encouraged by the success, I participated in a 21km marathon and haven’t looked back since then,” she said.
Thanking her husband for continuous support, she said: “Ab marathon ka shauk ho gaya hai, chhutega nahi (I am addicted to marathons now. I won’t leave it).
