LUCKNOW
: Body of a five-year-old girl with multiple injuries was found on the roadside in VivekKhand-II
of Gomtinagar
on Monday. The cause of death was yet to be ascertained as the panel of doctors, including a forensic medicine expert, was reportedly unavailable to conduct postmortem. The victim stayed with her mother Geeta Devi and two siblings in a shanty near Mithaiwala crossing in Gomtinagar.
Geeta's husband passed away four years ago. Geeta makes and sells grinding stones for livelihood.
Around 1am on Monday, Geeta woke up and found her youngest daughter missing. She searched for the child in the vicinity but could not find her. She then informed the night patrol constables around 3am. "At times the girl used to step out at night to answer nature's call," said Geeta's brother who was present outside KGMU mortuary.
Around 5.15, some morning walkers noticed a corpse on the roadside in Vivek Khand-II water tank. The security guard of a drug store then informed the Gomtinagar police about the body. The body was later identified by Geeta as that of her daughter. The body bore multiple wounds on the head, chest, arms and the back. In charge of Gomtinagar police station Devendra Dubey said the cause of death would be known after postmortem.
Though police said the girl could have been attacked by stray dogs resulting in her death, they failed to explain how a five-year-old went up to 300 metres from her shanty in the wee hours. The police questioned few persons in connection with the incident.
