Lucknow: Four people were killed, and two others sustained serious injuries when their SUV rammed the divider on Purvanchal Expressway in Sultanpur on Thursday evening. The injured were referred to Varanasi for treatment, said police.
Police said one Akhilesh Mishra, 40, a resident of Varanasi had gone to Lucknow with his friends and family members in an SUV.
Around 5pm, while returning their SUV lost control when they reached Milestone 102 on the expressway. “It first hit the divider, then overturned and cartwheeled for 50 metres before catching fire,” said SHO, Baldirai, Prabhakant Tiwari.
Passers-by and locals heard a loud sound and rushed to rescue the passengers stuck in the vehicle.
CO Baldirai, Rajaram, said four bodies were pulled out of the SUV and were later identified as Chhotelal, Vikas Mishra, Akhilesh Mishra, and Girjashankar.
