LUCKNOW: At least four women died and several others were injured after a large mound of soil collapsed in Uttar Pradesh's Kasganj, police said on Tuesday.
The officials reported that the women were gathering mud for house plastering when the soil pile unexpectedly collapsed, burying multiple women beneath it.
According to Kasganj district magistrate Medha Roopam, rescue efforts led to the recovery of nine women, with four of them pronounced dead upon retrieval.
"Nine women have been brought out, four of them were declared dead at the district hospital. Others are injured. The rescue operation was conducted very well here. We have checked the entire area with the help of JCB and the excavator. There is very little chance of anyone else being trapped there. NHAI's work was underway here."
"We will take action against whoever was negligent. It is being said that the women had come to get soil for their houses. We will speak with the women," she added.
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath acknowledged the unfortunate incident. He instructed the district administration to provide immediate medical assistance to the injured and ensure they receive proper medical care.
Expressing his sympathies, he conveyed his condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and hoped for the quick recovery of those who were injured.
Additionally, he directed the district officials to visit the location promptly and accelerate the relief operations.
