LUCKNOW: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) celebrated its 38th foundation day on Tuesday during which 23 awards were given to men in khaki for their distinguished services and valour.
The awards were given by Union minister of state for railways and textiles Darshana Vikram Jardosh.
While 16 RPF men were awarded for distinguished services, seven personnel, including one posthumous, were awarded for bravery of saving lives while on duty.
The recipients included 43-year-old head constable Gyan Chand, who died after been run over by Prayagraj-Jaipur Covid special express while attempting to save a woman who wanted to commit suicide at Bharwari railway station of Kaushambi on March 2, 2021.
Hailing from Deoria district, Gyan was awarded Sarvottam Jeewan Raksha Padak. He is survived by wife and two sons. SJRP was also given to constable Anil Kumar of Mumbai division, central railway zone.
For meritorious service, IG Atul Kumar Srivastava of North Eastern Railway (NER) was conferred with the President’s police medal.
Cook of Lucknow division of NR, Kailash Chandra Joshi, was awarded police medal for meritorious service.
Chief guest Jardosh announced the setting up of a skill up-gradation training centre on the premises of 3rd Battalion RPSF, Lucknow for family members of RPF personnel, especially women at the cost of Rs 3 crore.
Further, she announced construction of shelters-cum-mobilization halls for women RPF train escorting personnel at 75 locations across the country.
Later, the minister visited RDSO’s signal, air brake and fatigue laboratories and inspected the testing infrastructure.
